5530 XpressMusic RM-504The 5530 Xpress Music unveiled recently has some of the features from both its bigger brother the 5800 XpressMusic and the flagship N97. It is a touch screen handset that runs the S60 5th edition of the Symbian operating system. Not much is known about this handset as of yet besides the technical details.
It’s therefore exciting to watch the first 19minute video review (and full picture gallery) from the Generation Phone House (french blog) and to look for the interesting details that it reveals regarding this handset in terms of functions.
For a start the SIM card is inserted from the outside, next to the memory card and we are likely prone to experience the nightmare of removing sim cards as on the 5800 using the stylus (1:25 mins into the video).
Being tagged with the XpressMusic name means that the phone is focused on music, therefore the music player plugin on the homescreen allows you to pause, fast forward and rewind the music like on the N97 (7:39 minutes into the video). This is a significant upgrade from the music player plugin on the 5800 which only functioned as a shortcut to the music player.
Next up the video reveals what we have all been waiting for: kinetic scrolling in the Contacts (8:12 minutes into the video), as well as when navigating bookmarks (12:34 minutes). Kinetic is also supposed to be there in Messaging and MusicPlayer applications. But, unfortunately, when a website is open, it seems as though kinetic scrolling isn’t supported by the browser. It’d be very unfortunate if that was true.
Text input can be done by using the full screen QWERTY in landscape mode and when the phone is held in portrait mode it automatically turns to T9 (14:42 minutes). Whether that’s an actual option you can turn on and off is unfortunately not revealed. Another peculiar detail is that in portrait mode you can only choose between T9 and handwriting with no option for choosing a mini QWERTY.
In the gaming department, the reviewer revealed while speaking that the handset is said to come with 4 java games preinstalled that make use of the inbuilt accelerometer. Hardcore N-gage fans as myself are unluckily left out at the moment as it doesn’t support N-gage yet.
Here is the 19minute video showing all the good stuff (attention: the video is in french):
